Every year on December 2nd, the United Arab Emirates (UAE) celebrates Independence Day. However, the UAE did not have any war or bloodshed for independence. Before 1971, the UAE did not exist as a united country. Before 1971, there was an agreement between Arab leaders and the British, called the Protection Agreement. Under this agreement, the British provided security for the Arab lands and people. This agreement included the seven emirates, Bahrain, and Qatar. In 1968, the British government announced that they would no longer provide protection to the Arabs, and the agreement would end in 1971. After that, Bahrain gained independence in August 1971, and Qatar in September 1971. When the British agreement ended on December 1, 1971, all emirates became fully independent. On December 2, 1971, Abu Dhabi, Ajman, Dubai, Fujairah, Sharjah, and Umm Al Quwain united to form a federation. Later, on January 10, 1972, Ras Al Khaimah joined, completing the United Arab Emirates. On December 6, 1971, the UAE joined the Arab League, and on December 9, 1971, it became a member of the United Nations.
